Splurge vs. Save – Beauty Edition

Traditionally, it’s believed that the more expensive a beauty product or the better the name brand – the higher the quality. Here’s the thing, that’s partially true. Typically you do get higher quality items if you do splurge for the higher price. However – many beauty and makeup products really don’t have much variation from the expensive high-end brand to the drugstore brands. I am no beauty blogger – but I have managed to find a small rhythm in what I’m willing to spend on and what I would rather save on. These can vary from person to person, however. I think it truly depends on what you use the most and what your problem areas are.

Foundation:

I have struggled with acne since I was a baby (basically). I have gone through two rounds of Accutane, Proactive, Spironolactone, Murad, Birth Control, and now Curology. I have had times when my skin was as dry as could be yet majority of the time my skin is oily, so this stuff works amazing for oily skin and gives a flawless finish. Also, my skin is nice and ivory with pink undertones – something the beauty industry apparently hates. This is truly the best match to my skintone I’ve been able to find in years. I wear COLOR: No. 25 – Warm Ivory – for light skin with pink undertones

Facemasks:

This one is something that I have flip-flopped back and forth on whether I should be the money or not. In the end – skincare is soo important. Now a days so many beauty products are made with unknown or dangerous chemicals and I’m always a little skeptical on the cheaper stuff. However – this does not mean there aren’t some killer deals on skincare. But if you’re gonna splurge, it might as well be something like this.

Powder:

This depends highly on your skin type – however my favorite pressed powder is a $3.99 powder from any drugstore. It keeps my skin matte and adds light coverage if I decide to go sans foundation. Additionally, I’ve tried both expensive and inexpensive loose setting powders – I found no difference to the $30 loose powder that I’m currently stuck using and a cheaper version.

Mascara:

I have always, always used drugstore mascara and loved it. Even with my blonde as can be eyelashes. My go-to for years was The Rocket mascara by Maybelline. Recently I’ve found The Colossal Big Shot and it SLAYS the mascara game.

Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal Big Shot Mascara – $8.49

Maybelline Volum’ Express The Rocket Mascara -$6.99

Blush:

Blush is one of those beauty items I never saw the appeal of spending the big bucks on simply for the fact that the amount I use, as well as the pigmentation I have experienced is usually pretty uniform. I’ve even been known to use eyeshadow as blush – no judgement here.

NYX HD Blush – $6.99

Eyeliner:

Wearing glasses, I have to over exaggerate the eyeliner sometimes. However – I cannot for the life of me do a cateye or anything fancy. So, I stick to the drugstore stuff that has never failed me, stays on all day, and gets a nice, clean line.

Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner – $8.49

As I said, it truly depends on your personal style and what you focus on the most. I know there is a huge movement out therefore ‘clean’ beauty products and makeup. Although I see the importance of this – the convenience and price of the products I choose are usually the most important factor. If you prefer spending more money on all high end products – go for it. Just know that there truly are some great dupes and lower priced items that do the exact same thing!
