Swimsuits – no thanks. Swimsuits as a plus-sized woman – no thank you plus. Luckily, there is a huge movement for women to accept their bodies in any size and shape, and retailers are starting to catch on. Gone are the days of only having the black swimdress as an option (a well respected choice, yet not for everyone).
I typically have to go with an option that offers 1) Chest support 2) Chest Coverage 3) Tummy Coverage. For some, this may not be what’s most important. I am going to showcase my favorite options as a fuller woman in ALL the areas, as well as some options for women that have some junk in the trunk but want a little help in the chest region (think ruffles, ladies!).
Lane Bryant
Lane Bryant is my go-to for all things plus-sized, and it’s perfect timing as they are having a 30-50% off sale on all swim right now.
This is my current suit, and my favorite thus far. The gingham pattern adds just enough coverage in the tummy area, and the off the shoulder top gives my chest the perfect amount of coverage.
This is perfect option for complete and full coverage – in a color other than black! Although black is slimming, I think a fun color makes me feel more confident and free, especially somewhere I feel the most vulnerable (beach, pool, etc.). This one is a little pricier – but the quality speaks for itself. This is also available in a two-piece option if the one piece isn’t for you.
I’m contradicting myself with this one because it’s black – but it also offers so much fun with the flounce style. It still offers the full coverage that I so desperately need, but allows a little peek of the tummy if wanted. I’m thinking this is one I might need to add to my wardrobe for a low-key, toned down look.
However – a fun way to spice up the black flounce top would be to pair it with these adorable ruffled swim briefs. Adds a pop of color AND hides your muffin top. 10 out of 10!
Other Options
For those that need some help in the chest area – ruffles are your best friend! Stay away from the triangle and straight across styles, this will only accentuate the smaller nature of your chest.
Great examples of styles to go with:
This is a modest, tummy friendly options that gives the girls a little boost. The sweetheart neckline gives the illusion of cleavage, but stays tasteful.
This one is great because of the natural lift that is given by the built-in bra and lace up back. This style is black and white, but this a wildly popular cut that can give you the extra oomph you may be looking for.
Avenue
Avenue is another great option for plus-size wear. I don’t own any swimsuits from Avenue – but I do have some clothing that I love. Avenue offers some great options as well.
This adorable top is currently 50% off – score! But it gives the full coverage look AND tummy control in a cute little peplum way! I usually stray away from the peplum look in clothing – but it’s perfect for a swimsuit.
This is casual, sporty option that offers that color that I always so desperately need for my skin in the summer. Plus, the tiered effect is killer for making you look slimmer.
In the end, whatever you are comfortable in, you should wear. If you don’t like any skin showing, wear a t-shirt and shorts. Being in the water or outside should be enjoyable. Wasting your thoughts on what you look like is such a waste of time because everyone else will be worried about themselves (trust me.)
